If all you've scanned with is AVG, that is not sufficient.
I'm not sure if these sites will work on an XP computer.
Go here: https://www.eset.com/int/home/online-scanner/
Click on the Scan Now button on the left. It might tell you something has to be downloaded to your computer to run. If so, see if it downloads and scans.
Another online free scanner: http://free.kaspersky.com/
click on the Free Security Tools near the top right
You also haven't told us what browser you are using to 'download'. Some browsers are no longer supported on XP and don't work properly, IE 8 for example is almost useless these days because it so far behind and Chrome has dropped support for XP.
AVG may also be the problem if it's trying to scan downloads, not sure how the product is these days but a while ago it became overly bloated and overly intrusive.
go to above and download the .exe fix and see if this helps, after running the online scan from eset or kaspersky if they have one for xp
