Driver Power State Failure Blue Screens on Windows 7 Home Premium eMachine Laptop

    I recently have been getting blue shutdown screens on my laptop. I will give you plenty of information about my computer. I put all the information about the Blue screen dump files and my System Information file in an attachment. I hope this helps. I recently found out you could save the System Information file as a text and also as an .exe. This should help diagnose the problem! This is how it happens, I will be using my computer and then the computer will become very slow and unresponsive. It is not completely unresponsive but it will be so slow that I cannot use it, then after about 3 minutes of this slow unresponsiveness the blue screen will show up and say driver power state failure and shutdown. I recently formatted the computer because it had been doing this before so I restored it back to factory defaults about one month ago.

    The WER section of MSINFO32 shows blame pointing at AmUStor.sys - a driver for your ALCOR Micro SD Card Controller

    The others that you cite blamed your wireless driver and 2 with no specific blame. To further analyze them, please zip up the contents of the C:\Windows\Minidump directory and upload them with your next post.

    To fix the SD card controller issues - first try removing the software/drivers, and then download and install a fresh copy of the drivers.

    To fix the wireless drivers, please download a fresh copy of the wireless driver software, then uninstall the current copy from your system and install the freshly downloaded copy.

    Should the issues continue (and if the BSOD's don't point at any further issues) then we'll have to look at the hardware itself.

    I can do the first step that you ask about uploading the dump files but the other two steps I will have to wait to do. I am on dial-up until my mobile broadband plan starts over for the month on the 28th. Then I will be able to download the software drivers. I could try on dial up but it would just take a really long time probably. So I have to be patient and wait until the 28th. Here are the dump files as an attachment.

    Not a problem, we'll wait to see what happens on the 28th after you download and update the files that I've mentioned.

    Meanwhile, here's what I found in the Minidumps:

    All 3 of the memory dumps blame AmUStor.sys - so that's pretty conclusive that your your ALCOR Micro SD Card Controller is to blame. Also, the driver itself (AmUStor.sys) dates from 2009 - so it may be having compatibility issues with Win7.

    Your Modem (?Conexant USB modem?) has drivers dating from 2007. Please update them from the device manufacturer's website.

    Please update your Intel graphics drivers as they date from 2009 also. They're best updated from the Intel Download Center.

    If the above steps don't stop the BSOD's, please zip up and upload any new memory dumps with your next post - and we'll see what we can figure out from there.

    I am so sorry I am a day late! :(I was really, really, really busy downloading some

    other stuff besides the drivers. I downloaded about 3.8 GB of data in two days

    for some other stuff I really needed (Visual Studio 2010 Express iso, Unity 3D,

    Ubuntu 12 iso, Visual Studio for windows phone plus a few other things. Not done

    though still have to download SIOS game engine and its components and a Java SE

    JDK. Then I think I will be done (I hope so!). Normally, I do not use this much

    data, but I am trying to get a lot of stuff done right now. Man, when I get my

    new allotment of data for the month it is like Christmas! :)Then I go back to dial

    up for the rest of the month. I have not had any blue screens lately though. I

    have an eMachine software/driver updater on this computer. I checked it for

    updates and it says that there are no software or driver updates for my

    computer. I also downloaded the SD card and wireless drivers. I have reinstalled

    the wireless and SD card drivers. I also went to the device manager and checked

    each and every individual device for driver updates. There were none though.

    There were no new conexant drivers (It is a Zoom modem). For the Intel drivers I

    used the Intel® Driver Update Utility. This is what it said:

    The Intel Driver Chipset Device Software Utility said that the version I had installed was newer than the one I was trying to install so I did not install it. That is all I have for you about the drivers.

    One point to note is that I have a 32 GB SD card that I use for ReadyBoost. I use all 32 GB for ReadyBoost. Could that have anything to do with the blue screens?

    I get notified by email whenever someone responds to this topic - so it's not a big deal (for me) that you have to wait to download.

    BSOD's are caused by one of these 3 things:
    - 3rd party drivers (most common)
    - hardware problems
    - Windows problems (least common)

    While it's possible that ReadyBoost is contributing to this, the signs all point to a problem with the SD card reader.

    You've updated the SD card reader drivers - so wait and see if the BSOD's go away.
    If not, we can check other things - but that'll be dependent on what the memory dumps show us.

    FWIW - should the memory dumps continue to point at the SD card reader, the next 2 possibilities are hardware problems with the card reader - or even hardware problems with the 32 gB card that you use. Only after ruling out those (and the drivers) can we begin to consider that this might be a ReadyBoost (Windows) problem.

    And, just FYI, there aren't many options for fixing Windows issues - so the usual "fix" is to wipe everything off ALL of the drives (to include the 32 gB SC card) and then install a "clean" copy of Windows.

    I was using my computer for the last week with out rebooting it. So I then tried to use my USB devices and the computer would not register them or make the "Ba thump" sound when they are inserted or taken out. Some of the USB devices that I had in for the last few days were registered but any new devices I tried to use it did not register. So I thought I would just reboot the computer. So I told it to reboot. Then it was shutting down, but it took about 45 minutes and then it gave a blue screen and said "Driver power state failure" and shut off. I had to choose "Start windows normally" when it started back up. This is a fairly new Windows installation since it is only about one month ago since I formatted everything and reinstalled using the recovery discs. Here is the minidump file and here is what it said in the event viewer:

    I was having these blue screen long before I got the SD card. This "driver power state failure" blue screen has been happening before I got the SD card. It has been happening on and off for the last year. The computer is only 1 year old. I bought it new in 2011. It has been happening since I bought it. It happens infrequently so I did not think it was a problem. Now I do think it is a problem though.

    Systems are dynamic. They are sometimes caused by not just one, but a combination of issues.
    Also, sometimes they won't show up until a particular set of circumstances are present (such as a particular Windows Update.

    This memory dump doesn't blame anything in particular, and is slightly different from the previous one's.
