this may sound like a really stupid question but if xp doesn't have a dos prompt how do you format the h.d?

easiest way is to run setup from the xp cd, it has the options to format there. If it's a non os drive you can format from disk management.

windowsXP does have a "command prompt" on the start menu. But another way to format a disk is to have a DOS boot disk with fdisk on it. Shut down your computer & reboot with this floppy and instead of going into XP it'll go into this DOS disk.

You can even download a DOS boot floppy from the web. I did that but now I forgot the site I got it from!

You can't format from the Command Prompt because XP is running. Basically, you'd be asking the OS to kill itself. You can either boot to DOS (assuming your on FAT32) or use the WINXP CD ROM.
