during windows98 start-up

    when i start-up my computer, error message appears.

    abort, failed, retry. what does this error message mean?

    no icon's appear during start-up.

    Do you have a floppy disk in the drive while you are starting the computer?

    while trying to use safe mode, error message that states

    VKD.

    can't do proper shut-down

    while trying to put my computer in the safe mode, i hit enter
    message states as follows= vkd.. C:

    That's it? You get a menu, you choose safemode, hit enter, and all that pops up is:

    vkd c:

    Are you sure it isn't a message like VXD?

    And please try to answer all the questions.....

    did this just start happening?

    i was playing the game sorry! did a proper shut-down
    the next time i started my computer, error message
    appeared. abort, failed, retry
    shut down computer.
    reboot computer while hitting f8 key
    tryed to put in safe mode, hit enter
    then error message appeared vkd..C:

    The abort, retry, failed message is symptomatic of a failing drive (assuming this is not a floppy disk being loaded).

    The VKD error, if it is this one (see link), may be due to a dodgy keyboard, but more often it is due to damaged clusters on the hard drive. Sometimes it can be resolved by booting to a command prompt (choose that instead of safe mode) and, at the c:\> prompt enter:

    scandisk /surface /all

    Be prepared to reinstall windows to ulitmately resolve this, or even to format and do a clean install.
