I recently updated my Sony E308 DS that came with Windows 98 to Windows XP Home Edition. There has been one nagging problem and neither Sony nor Microsoft are much help. The CD-Rom will work but the DVD does not. My husband and I do not exactly agree on what to do. He's insisting that a driver is the issue and I however think that a program (ie) Cineplayer for example is all we need to do. They advertise a decoder pack which will enable you to play DVD movies. Any help out there? I won't ask who's side you are on. Thanks

I'm going to agree with your husband on this one. Have you searched for more recent drivers? Since you just upgraded to XP, there may be a compatibility issue with you current drivers. Perhaps searching the manufactioner's website for driver updates in XP would help. You might also have success installing a driver update in device manager. You can get to device manager by pushing alt+pause/break, then go to the hardware tab, and click device manager. Once in device manager you can check to see if there are any problems with the device, under CD/DVD-ROM drives.

When you put the DVD in, does it read the DVD fine. If so, I would agree that it is the software. Maybe try Windows Media Player, that should play it. When you but the DVD in, does it pop-up and ask you what to do (play with Media Player).

Me and ssharris been trying to fix this, just posting to keep this up to date incase anyone has any ideas. She has tried reinstalling the driver several times with no success. The Cd-rom works but when she sticks a DVD in it does not work. She can't view any of the files on the DVD or play it. Anyone with any ideas??

Hi...I also upgraded to Windows XP only I went with Pro...I cannot play my dvd player either and I also lost the little speaker for my sound on the taskbar.
I bought and downloaded the CinePlayer and installed it...(at the cost of $20.00)...and it still will not work. Soooo...I will either have to buy another DVD-Player or find someone to help me out with this problem here.
I also searched for an updated driver and was told there are no new ones available and I have the most current.
Any ideas on solving this?
Thanks in advance!!
