Just installed a DVD in my PC . Want to use it for watching movies . Only problem is when I pop a movie in it nothing works . I assume it is the software but where can I get any that will let me watch a movie ? I have Nero 8 but they want an upgrade to do this . I have Roxio and that doesn't seem to work , I have Easy CD Creator 5 Basic and that doesn't do it and I just tried VLC media player to no avail . The VLC media player almost gave me some hope but what I got was huge pixels and a flash of the movie at times . Any help out there ?

Ok.....you may be lucky that when the trial runs out the decoder will still be left behind

the easy way is to install VLC media player
Padutch's original post said VLC produced a very rare state of failure. Why Power DVD's codec would work fine and not VLC's?? The GOM player might do the trick as it's approach to playback is a little different; http://www.gomlab.com/eng/.

I don't think you're doing anything wrong, when VLC and GOM fail to play a DVD there is something actively interfering or not functioning correctly. If you have ever allowed a self-contained DVD player to load itself from the DVD and play the movie in the past, it could cause such interference but you said you only just added a DVD player and it doesn't seem to be a problem with the DVD drive itself or Power DVD wouldn't work either.

Its officially a mystery from my limited perspective.

OK let me go through the whole problem here . VLC gives me real large pixels for a picture plus the sound . Gom gives me the sound but no video . I purchased SonicCinePlayerDVDDecoderPackv2.31_SDD so my Windows Media Player world work but I get sound and no video . I can get sound and video when I use Cyberlink but it is good for only 30 days so I would like to get my Media Player working . OH and Nero gives me nothing at all.

You did? From where?
http://www.roxio.com/enu/products/cineplayer/vista/overview.html is for vista but there is a link for XP . I didn't read and purchased the one for vista first . Had to purchase the one for XP now I have 2 . You have Vista I will give it to you plus the key that was not used . I can't use it as I have XP .
Back to my problems ,they got worse . I uninstalled Media Player 11 or rolled it back as they say . Then I went to reinstall it again and it will not reinstall . Just not my day .

Which version of VLC did you try? I've used it on my Windows XP Pro machine to play commerical DVDs without problems. It can be a little slow to fire up but once it does, it plays just fine. I don't have any other DVD playback software on my system. I'm using VLC 0.8.6d. Also, which DVDs are you having problems watching?

Peace...
