Hi, the specs and o\s are as follows

    Windows '98se
    AMD duron 800Mhz
    384 Mb Ram
    2 times hdd's 1st 20Gb ( partioned ) & 2nd 8.4 Gb

I have my dvd set up as secondary master with a cd\w secondary slave
In device manager the dvd is recognised and the driver is installed okay, I've tried removing the dvd and have windows redetect it, which it does without a problem.

    Thanks

well i think thats enough info to start with,if we need more someone will let you know:)
try setting up your cd drives the other way around ie:master/slave,slave/master

sometimes it can be as simple as that.
    good luck.

click on My Computer (desktop) > control panel > system > device manager > look down the list for cd rom and click on the + in front of it. This will open it up. See if both your drives are listed there and also if there is a yellow ! or other symbol there in front of it. It may have a conflict with another device. It should list both cd drives there. You can try removing it by clicking on it then on remove down below. Shut down your computer and reboot it. It should come up with found new hardware and reinstall it. My dvd drive does not need special drivers and uses MS driver. By the way what make is the drive??
