dvd play on a hp windows 8

    Simplest thing but I can't get it to work.
    The dvds will show up in files but it won't play them, help??

    Windows does not automatically come with the ability to play DVDs. (Thank DRA.) Microsoft included this ability with Windows 7 and got into a lot of trouble for doing so. So, Windows 8 does not include it. You either are required to purchase the Media Center add-on (was free until the end of January), or use a third-party program (many free ones).

    One such program is VLC Media Player (http://www.videolan.org/vlc/index.html). This sucker plays just about anything.

    I've tried all the media player apps its has.

    And if I have to get a add on program, I can't do that without internet can I?

    That's correct, but you also need internet to post here. :) I tried VLC yesterday and it worked "out of the box" for me, but others have had trouble. Check out some of the recent threads in this forum.
