dvd-rom clicks playing cd

    i just installed a used dvd-rom..a pioneer 114..i think?...when i play dvds it works just fine ,but when i try to to install software or play a cd..it will click..its making same sound my hard drive made just before it died on me....is it shot?and why does it play dvds just fine with no noise or problems?ill open up pc tonight just to double check the jumper setting..the cd-rom that i replaced dvd with was set at master..i think i had dvd set at cable select..dont know if that makes a difference much?..
