DVD-ROM help! argg

grrr. i've got an HP pavilion 515n, and it orginally came with a DVD-ROM drive that always worked great. i reformatted my harddrive a couple days ago, now my DVD-ROM won't "play" DVDs. i can read CDs and music cds fine, and even when i put in a dvd it says "DVD". But whenever I try to play it on anything, it says "overlay failed. Lower screen resolution or color depth." I did both of those, and the DVD still wouldn't play for either one. someone help pleeeease.
