I am using Windows 2000 and have a sony dvd drive. Suddenly, whenever I try to play media from this device, either dvds or avis, mpgs, audio cd's etc, the sound is distorted, with clicks and cracks. The images are ok. If I use another cd-drive, or copy the files to hard disk, the sound is ok. But every sound played in this device is distorted.

It may be there is a loose connection or a little corrosion on the pins connecting the drive to the sound card. The cable is small and usually is on the end opposite the power connector.

If you have a set of headphones try plugging into the front of the drive. Most drives place to plug in and a volume control for the plug along side it. If the audio is ok there then the problem is most likely somewhere other than the drive.
