DVD video not working-error "display overlay not available"

I have never used the DVD on my computer. First, I had no DVD's to try, then had a lightning strike which got my motherboard. A while after I had it worked on, I finally got around to borrowing a DVD to try. Evidently, something got messed up, hopefully just a setting, when it was worked on.

The DVD program starts and there is sound, but the window displays the error "Display Overlay Not Available" in the middle of the window which is filled with diagonal stripes.

I have Windows 98. The original computer components are Gateway, including the DVD player. Only the motherboard and modem have been replaced, along with the tower case.

I am not a computer expert, obviously since I am having to ask this question, so I would much appreciate if someone is able to help me with this. I did a search and found one other post about this, but there were not really any instructions on how the problem was fixed.

Try lowering the screen resoultion to 800x600 or lower the color bit rate to 16. Also make sure no other programs are using the video interface such as any video editing programs, netmeeting etc...

I tried lowering the resolution and color bit rate, but that didn't help. I did find on the control panel something called software cinemaster, in which I could change the video settings. It was set on hardware motion compensation, but other choices were pc quality, basic quality, or full quality. Changing to one other than hardware motion compensation made the diagonal lines and the error message go away, but the window for the dvd picture was then just black.
