I think the title pretty much speaks for itself. If it's not possible on a basic install of XP, is there any particular program I can install to make it possible? Or do I just have to buy a separate DVD-writer for my laptop, and rely on transferring files and THEN writing to DVD before then?

The problem is, that a DVD or CD writer relies on a steady stream of data, they have minimal on-board buffers.

A network delivers data in a lumpy manner usually, so the chances are very high that the drive will suddenly run out of data while burning. Many coasters will result.

Best to transfer the file to the local HDD then burn.
