One of my hard drives is dying, almost dead.

I haven't unplugged it yet cause I'm too lazy. Occasionally what it'll do is either cause My Computer to get the green ribbon of death which subsequently causes Firefox to be unable to open and pops up a box asking if I want to format my D drive. Also when I restart my computer it asks to do a chkdsk on that drive, except rather than asking if I want to perform it on the D drive, it has some weird long string of letters and numbers.

In the device manager, the drive is listed as " ; U + mJ ATA Device".

Is this a hardware malfunction or what? I've never seen this happen to a failing drive.

Usually an indication that the drive electronics are
failing and it is not reading the drive firmware properly.
