Infected with a virus. EEXPLORER.EXE cannot be deleted. I cannot get into msconfig or regedit unless I go into safe mode. I have researched on this and found several suggestions on files to remove and what to look for. None of the files were found. I have run my virus scan and it cleaned the files that were infected with w32pate.b, yet when I go back into regular mode, still EEXPLORER.EXE remains. What can I do? Please Help!!!

The problem is on my wife's computer. She has a dell dimension 2350, Intel Pentium 4 2.2 Ghz 512 MB of RAM Running XP SP1.

Oh and ran hijackthis and even after removal, it comes back.

You can close this thread: After hours and hours of searching I found something called RegRun Startup Optimizer. This allowed me to prevent eexplorer to start on startup and I am now able to go into msconfig and do a ctrl alt delete for running processes. Hopefully this will help somebody in the future.,

Edit: You have more than just EEXPLORER problem, so I strongly recommend that you follow the instructions I post below. :)

Have these instructions printed or in a convenient Notepad (or Wordpad) file so you can view them in Safe Mode or with browser closed.

Run Hijack This again and put a check by these. Close all windows except Hijack This and click Fix checked

Restart to safe mode.

How to start your computer in safe mode

Because XP will not always show you hidden files and folders by default, Go to Start > Search and under "More advanced search options".
Make sure there is a check by "Search System Folders" and "Search hidden files and folders" and "Search system subfolders"

Next click on My Computer. Go to Tools > Folder Options. Click on the View tab and make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is checked. Also uncheck "Hide protected operating system files" and "Hide extensions for known file types" . Now click "Apply to all folders"
Click "Apply" then "OK"

Find and delete:

The C:\active.exe file
The C:\WINDOWS\System32\EEXPLORER.EXE file

Next navigate to the C:\Documents and Settings\Lombards\Local Settings\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Finally go to Control Panel > Internet Options. On the General tab under "Temporary Internet Files" Click "Delete Files". Put a check by "Delete Offline Content" and click OK. Now click the "Delete Cookies" button and click OK.

Also in safe mode navigate to the C:\Windows\Temp folder. Open the Temp folder and go to Edit > Select All then Edit > Delete to delete the entire contents of the Temp folder.

Empty the Recycle Bin

Reboot to normal mode,

Go here or here and do an online virus scan:

Be sure and put a check in the box by "Auto Clean" before you do the scan. If it finds anything that it cannot clean have it delete it or make a note of the file location so you can delete it yourself.

Come back here and post another HijackThis log in your next reply
