It wouldn't show up on a hard drive search if it was attached and not downloaded or if it was streaming.

It was probably just a sound embedded in an email message.

assuming it was embedded in an e-mail, how do i find it to get rid of it.
i have no saved e-mails, at the moment, with attachments.

It wouldn't have to have an attachment. See if opening any particular message plays the sound.

Its also possible your mail client is set to play a sound when you have mail or something like that.

no music came when i opened any of my existing e-mails.
the music seems to come as i am attempting to download new e-mails.
could find nothing in preferences or anything from my isp that would cause it to happen.
this is a recent event and never have had it for the last 5 years.
    what next ????

Go to Start > Settings > Control Panel and double click Sound and Multimedia.
Scroll down to new mail notification and see what is listed, if you click the button, if will play the tune, is this what you hear.??

dell, the sound i get when i test the button is the normal windows sound.
the sound i want to get rid of is a few bars of music that sounds like it comes from the beverly hillbillies.
my wife has the same problem on her computer so it is most likely that it came from an external source and not from
    windows.
