My machine won't boot! When I turn it on the fans start, HDD light comes on and the process starts. I get the single POST beep and the screen displays the CPU details - but then it stops, no memory count, no nothing. repeated attempts to start resulted in a short period when everything was fine - except I was nervous that I didn't know what was wrong and that it would happen again! Then it did and nothing will move it.

I am running XP - but it doesn't get that far! It's an Athlon 64 X2 4400 CPU on an ASUS A8NE motherboard with 2 x1 gig DDR400 memory. The BIOS is Phoenix Award v6.00PG with the ASUS ACPI BIOS rev 1010 -

any ideas? I am a little nervous about poking round inside but it looks like I might have to!

Some computers have this issue if a USB thumb drive is plugged in at boot time.
