WIN98se Dell Dimension XPS T700r

Son was trying to get my computer to run better! Means well but..

Well he admits to using this program and removing stuff in the duplicates; now my Trend Micro doesn't work & I can't uninstall & reinstall because there is a missing dll file.

He said everything was put into the recycle bin. I restored everything in it but still doesn't work. After going to the Easy Cleaner web page and reading it, I don't think he removed the right files from the duplicates. I also noticed my Adobe Acrobat Reader isn't working right & have uninstalled that..Is there any hope for me? I did shut down & restart.

He did save logs on the items he ran on Easy Cleaner if you need them. I appreciate any help, thanks.

Don't know if you'll need HJT log but just in case.

These cleaning programs often remove essential "junk" or duplicates that aren't.Dll's are
shared links so usually more than 1 application uses them.Do you get an error message re
the Dll when starting Trend? This helps ID the missing link, which may be available @ if I
remember, DLL.com.Setting up Windows will replace system specific Dll's,a simple setup is
all that's required, not a complete install. This will preserve all your settings & data.
Once you id the missing link you may find it here:

Reboot your computer, hold down the Control key until you see a menu on a black screen. Look for Dos Prompt, I believe it is 5. Type in 5 enter. When you see the:
C:\

Type:

scanreg/restore

hit Enter

Your computer will bring up 5 dates, Click on a date prior to the date your son deleted the the files. Click okm your computer should restore the files. (y)

Thanks for the response.

Deodar:
link doesn't work.
Trend Micro Error 1723 - There is a problem with this window installer. A dll required for this install to complete could not be run. Contact your vendor.
I'm a bit confused what you wrote "This helps ID the missing link, which may be available @ if I
remember, DLL.com.Setting up Windows will replace system specific Dll's,a simple setup is
all that's required,not a complete install."

I have a saved Easy Cleaner log on all the files that were "duplicates" before he deleted. I will look in there & see what I can find. I am sure there are also more dll files missing. They were "duplicates" according to son...he wants me to get a new computer, I think he did this deliberately:(

Tonkacat: Is this scanreg/restore procedure for WIN98se?

Thank you

Scanreg/restore is indeed for Win98SE and can be a real life saver. You can also get to MS-DOS by selecting it on the shutdown screen.

Google "Missing Dll's" for more.Run SFC to check system Dll's that may be missing.Type it
in the RUN box.Or usehelp & Support.Have your 98SE CD to insert if this locates any. If
the Dll is Windows Installer or that has a problem visit Microsoft, there may be one there.
If the Dll is specific to Trend Micro I would back this application up to CD before this;
Uninstall then Reinstall Trend Micro application,in the process it may replace the missing
link.Difficult to replace unless you know what to look for.If all else fails:Insert Windows CD,
click 'my Computer' explore/Click CD Drive D ("Windows 98 SE") explore/Click 'Setup"-
then take a coffee break as install replaces missing or corrupt files without effecting any
of your applications or personal settings.

I am sorry I am still confused with your instructions. I don't know if you are talking about Trend Micro (solved) or other missing dlls. Forgive me but I generally just email, surf & do income taxes on my computer. I have had help from TSG in past and prefer simple instructions. I have never had CD's out of the box that Dell sent them in.

Was able to uninstall Trend Micro using PCCTool. I am currently going thru Easy cleaner log to see what other dll files he removed. Used Sytem file checker, it found ragent.dll; fp4autl.dll; fp4awec.dll all appear to be in MS Word 2000 appears to work ok. However when I try opening MS Works it won't open, needs missing file WKSGen.dll (I have disc). I did search and was able to find all these files????

"Yahooed" :) for these 3 dll files & found on web but didn't download yet. I think they are zip files & must download Winzip program.

I am a bit afraid to do Scanreg/restore but will take a peek now.
Thanks again,
Netty

Nettyiam,

Scanregistry only holds the most recent 5 good backups.

It can fix many a problem and is worth a try - but each day you delay the backup that could be useful is getting further away.

Start your computer and constantly tap f8. You will be presented with the Startup Menu.

Use the arrow keys and select the one that says ...Command Prompt Only.

At the prompt type in scanreg /restore (note the space after scanreg)

Select a date prior to your problem.

Do you have a date other than the last one you could try - 1/08/06 for example - that is prior to your problem?

01/08/06 is the date he ran the Easy Cleaner.
Have reinstalled the PC-cillin Internet Security..seems fine & appears to be working better than before.

Do have a question when I went into MS-DOS I got the black screen, after I ran the scan & finished. I got a black screen with a flashing C:
I didn't know how to shut down my computer so just used button on tower & sweated!

I am still checking the log from Easy Cleaner which is a slow process. I'm trying all the programs on my computer to see if there are any problems w/missing dll files. Also considering installing XP if I can find the WINXP cd that came with my daughter's ME which she is still using ME. Mmmm wondering if son has it??

I ran System File Checker as Deodar recommended, it found the files listed in my previous post:
" ragent.dll; fp4autl.dll; fp4awec.dll " all appear to be in MS Word 2000 so far it appears to work ok. However when I try opening MS Works it won't open, needs missing file WKSGen.dll (I have disc).I did search and was able to find all these files? The first 3 appear in Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft Shared\Web Server\40\Bin.

WKSGEN.dll is found in Program Files\Common Files\Microsoft\Shared Web Folders

I have some other commitments that have more priority but I will try to do your suggestion:scanreg/fix, scanreg/autorun

I might add that the Sys File Checker did not show WKSGEN.dll as missing.
