Ok Im gonna try to keep this as simple as i can but basically I just recently invested in a new laptop with windows vista and would like to transfer some files (music, word documents, video clips (not porn...lol)) to my new computer using a easy transfer cable. Only problem is that my old compter, which uses widows xp, has a broken cd-rom tray (cuz im a moron and accidentally kicked it and broke it) therefor disabling me to install the easy transfer cable software. I looked into the whole trasferring files over the net thing but that seemed a little too technical to me. Is there any way i can download the software over the net? what other options do i have for transferring my files to my new computer? THANK YOU FOR YOUR TIME!

Would a download page on the Microsoft web site work?

Assuming both computers have Ethernet ports, a crossover patch cable should let you connect the two computers and share folders for copying.

How much data are you talking about? A 1 or 2 GB USB Thumb drive might be practical for moving a few GB of data.

EDIT: If you have many GB of data to move, you might consider temporarily removing the hard drive from the old computer connecting it to the new computer. If you are trashing the old computer, the old drive could be left in the new computer for extra storage

Sorry about that. I skipped right over the laptop reference in your post.

FWiW, external hard USB hard drive enclosures are not that expensive these days. If the old HD is a decent size and the old computer doesn't need it, it could provide you with backup storage for the laptop.

Do you already have the transfer cable? The software is probably available on the manufacturers web site.

Ok soItried that link and it worked...I downloaded th software on my new comp and bought the belkin easy transfer cable and was able to transfer most of my settings onto my new computer. Main reason I was eager to do this whole prcess was because of my music. I had over 2,500 music files but for some reason it wont transfer roughly 300 of my songs. Any idea why? Thanks for all your help!

I would still try taking ownership and then run the transfer.
