Hi All,

I have 2 hopefully small problems... I hope it's not wrong to bring them both up in the one post but I run WinXP so I guess the post isn't completely unrelated to everything in here.. hahah

Prob 1:
Every time I boot up, I get an alert screen with '00011902.exe' in the title bar and in the body 'This application has failed to start because EGNSEngine.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.' I did a search on my computer (including hidden files & subfolders) and it didn't find the *.exe file the alert mentioned, however it DID find the *.dll file, it was located in: C:\Program Files\Common Files\GMT... I use Ad Aware 6 which may possibly be related to this, not sure - I do know that I only installed Ad Aware recently since my new HDD, and this problem has only started occurring recently. When searching for the reason for the existence of this dll file in google, there are places to download it from but I fear doing that in case it messes something else up...?

Prob 2:
I had to replace my HDD a couple of weeks ago coz my old one (only 13 mths old mind you!) crashed. For the past few days, when cold booting, I am prompted as to whether I want to start in 'Normal mode' or in 'Safe mode'... 'Normal mode' is highlighted by default, I generally select that, continue the boot up, restart and it starts normally.. what would cause this? The only pattern I see is that when cold booting it does this, when warm booting, it doesn't.. go figure!

Hope this post isn't too long... hmmm.. I'll appreciate any feedback I get (provided it's friendly .. hehe) ... bye for now.

Thanks. :p

It sounds like some adware/spyware is still resident.
EGNSEngine.dll belongs to Gator I believe.

Download Spybot from here. It may find things Adaware misses.
http://spybot.safer-networking.de/

The prompt to start in normal or safe mode sounds like Windows may not be shutting down correctly. When you replaced your HDD, how did you reload your system? I wonder if you have restored all the drivers for the motherboard etc?

go to http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip , and download 'Hijack This!'.
Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log" button.
Press that, save the log somewhere, and please copy & paste its contents to the forum.

It will possibly show issues deserving our attention, but most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so do NOT fix anything yet.
Someone here will be happy to help you analyze the results.

OK Great.. I am going to download that right now. :) Thanks for that! :) So would you think that I should use Spybot instead of Ad Aware or use them both in conjunction with eachother?

Now that you mention it, I have noticed that sometimes when my computer is shutting down, when it is on the 'Windows is shutting down' screen, it sometimes makes the error alert sound behind the scenes, I'm not sure what it's doing there.. hmmm..

I had a friend do most of the installation of the new HDD.. it was a brand new HDD, we formatted it, then partitioned it then installed WinXP with SP1.. clean install.. I recall that I no longer had the original CD for the MB but I am pretty sure that my friend downloaded it, I will check that out with him. Do you suggest that perhaps I should download the appropriate driver for my MB and install it? Is it possible to do that when everything is up and running?

I always use both Spybot & adaware, they work well in combination, one finds what the other doesn't, just reboot inbetween running them

Thanks for your help guys.. :) I installed and ran Spybot and it has fixed my problem! It's not prompting to start in safe mode anymore either... All good.

Till next time, bye for now.
