Welcome to TSG!

Don't know about the memory stick.

What is your operating system and what do you use for email?

As to emails, a filename has 2 parts. The name and the extension.
What is the extension of the attachments that won't open? Is it all
attachments? I see you can receive emails and can you open all
attachments from people other than your daughter?

If you are getting an error code, post all of it here as well.

Do you use an email client like Windows Mail to receive your emails?
Or are you going to the website to get them?

What is the extension of an attachment that will not open?
(example: image.jpg is a filename for a picture format...the
extension is .jpg)

You get the "cannot find function in DLL" error when attempting to open
the email attachment(s) from Hotmail? But you can open the email itself,
correct?

Since others can open her attachments, it appears that the problem
would be on your computer.

Will need more information.
That is not a common error. Is that the complete error message?
Usually there would be some kind of numbers or the name of a specific
.DLL involved in the error message.

What about the 2 other critical questions?
Extension?
What program to open the emails?

Can you open the attachment if you save it to your hard drive first?

VistaRookie Yes that's complete error message, no numbers, have tried saving to hard drive, I get the same message when I try to open. I use my ISP(tesco.net) to open emails. Only info I have on extensions PIC.doc. As you say must be my PC, which at the moment is working perfectly, have run checks on my hard drive etc, all working OK.

Thank you for the additional information. Knowing that
the .doc attachments are the problem helps considerably.
As to which program you use to open the emails, that is
still uncertain. Yes your emails come from Tesco, however,
you either have to visit their website to open them, probably
using Internet Explorer OR you are using an email client.
Maybe Windows Mail.

Windows does not come with a program to open files with
.doc extension. You need MS Word or a Word Viewer,
MS Office or Open Office.

It is possible you have MS Word or MS Office...only you
can tell me that. If so, perhaps there is a corrupt file and it
needs to be reinstalled.

If you don't have any of the above programs, it seems you
don't need to create word documents, so a viewer should
work. But it is your choice of which one you want to get.

So starting with the viewer, here is where you can download
the free viewer from MS. Since your daughter has XP, she
most likely is using Word 2003. You might check with her
because there are 3 versions that you can download.

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/891090

MS Word and MS Office are programs you would buy if you
feel you would want to.

Open Office is open source freeware. Here is the link for
that (fairly large download). It will basically do everything
that MS office will do.

http://why.openoffice.org/

Post back, we'll keep trying if something I mentioned above
isn't the solution.

Does your daughter use MS Office 2003 as well or does she use a
different version?

When you save the .doc file to your hard drive...then open Word and
go to where the doc file is located, can you open it that way?

I am not an MS Office/Word user, my help may be limited at this point.
Try running "Detect and Repair" from the Help menu in word 2003.

I believe Office also has a repair using the CD. For details you will have
to check your CD/help files. Or post a new question stating you cannot
open MS Office2003 .Doc files in the business applications forum here
at TSG. And ask about repairing Office.

http://forums.techguy.org/16-business-applications/

If you are able to run the repair and it gets to a point where it cannot
find certain .CAB files, here is a link to download several.

http://www.harrythompson.com/ZF561407.CAB.htm

MS also has Windows Install Clean Up Utility which can be used to
Uninstall Office:

Anti-virus programs could be stopping those attachments. Especially
if it scans your emails.

You did not say what the attachment was but have them zip the attachment up and email it again. Then save it and do a scan to check that it is safe. I say that because maybe hotmail found something and took it away and that is why you can't open it. But again they should tell you.
If I download something after Avast alerts me or alerts me before I download but I still download it the file will be 0KB because it cleans it.
