EMS error

Hi,

I have a computer I got from a friend, and he says the only thing wrong with it is something is wrong with the hard drive. I checked it and it boots up okay, (has Win98se as OS) but when you boot up in normal or safe mode you get a "EMS error" message. I want to know can this be remedied by just putting in a new hard drive? Can anything on the old drive be saved? Hope you can help me...thanx!

what is the exact error message, ems errors generally refer to memory allocation problems in the config or autoexec.

that was the exact error message. I tried to load Win98 in normal mode and in safe mode and just as it was about to appear, it went to the DOS looking screen saying "EMS error". If I can get another monitor, I'll try to load it up again, but i saw it twice.
