I have a socalled encoder & decoder, bought from Amazon UK. Their
title is
Transform Your Records Cassettes Cd Vinyl to Mp3 Format.. Encoder - Decoder

by sec

No Transform Your Records Cassettes Cd Vinyl to Mp3 Format.. Encoder - Decoder

by sec

Now the beaut little gadget says NIL on its small screen when I try to encode music.
The manual doesn't mention this condition, and I can't find the outfit "sec" who
presumably makes it.

What does NIL mean? How do I get back to normal function?

Thank you.

NIL means "nothing" so it probable means it can't detect any input to the device.

On the link you posted there's a picture of the back of the device and it looks like you should have the switch set to AUX and your player plugged into AUX IN.
