Epson Workforce 635: Scan cannot communicate with the scanner

    RAM: 2974 Mb
    Graphics Card: Mobile Intel(R) 4 Series Express Chipset Family, 1295 Mb
    Hard Drives: C: Total - 142528 MB, Free - 1274 MB; D: Total - 10094 MB, Free - 1785 MB;
    Motherboard: Hewlett-Packard, 360B
    Antivirus: PC Cleaner Pro, Updated: Yes, On-Demand Scanner: Disabled. And Norton Internet Security

    I have an Epson Workforce 635 4-in-1.
    The scanner function used to work. Last used 7-1-13.
    Scan Settings says "Scanner is ready Interface USB"
    Scan says "cannot communicate with the scanner. make sure the scanner is on, correctly setup with no errors indicated."
    Event Manager says "Cannot connect to scanner. Check the scanner connection"
    Copy, FAX, and Print all work fine.
    I uninstalled and reinstalled all the software. I removed an old printer driver. I tried a different USB port. Upgraded the firmware.
    I'm not certain but, I believe my problems started when I upgraded my printer software. We were having some problems with the FAX. It turned out to be a setup/protocol problem.
