I own a hp pavilion slimline model number-s3712f
When I turn it on it shows a black screen with err1err3 and a flashing cursor. I press enter and it says :Err1Err3disk boot failure, insert system disk and press enter.
I bought the computer used (regret) and it came with no disks of any type.
I have tried entering the BIOS setup but it is asking for a password which i do not have (I know the rules).

What do i need to do to get my computer back?

    Hi and welcome to TSG

It sounds like your hard drive is failing

Is there any important data on there? Since there are no discs, you could try to run the HP System Recovery, which is on the partition of the hard drive. (Hoping that the drive is still fully functioning that is)

To launch it, turn on the computer and immediately press the F11 key repeatedly, about once every second, until the Recovery Manager opens.

Thanks! This seems like a really good site.

I do have some important data i would like to try to save if possible. Will the recovery manager erase all the data?

    BTW Congrats on getting married.

You're welcome. Yes it would. If you can't boot into Windows at all, you could try taking out the drive, connecting it to another PC and try to pull the data off that way.

I'm wondering if the drive is so damaged that that's why it cannot restore.

It would be ideal to get into the BIOS - that way we could either run a diagnostics check on the drive or see if a setting for hard drive configuration was changed.

But you mentioned not knowing the password. And that would be against the rules here to try to bypass that in any way.

Yes I do not have the BIOS password. I bought the computer used from a rental place. If I can't find the password what are other options? Order recovery discs from HP?

I really don't wanna say go order the discs and then it turns out the drive is bad, too.

First maybe make sure that we aren't pressing the wrong key. If F11 is failing, let's try F10 or F12.

If those don't work either, then I was thinking maybe we could create a boot disc containing some diagnostic tools (particularly hard drive scanners)

Would you be able to access another computer to download the Ultimate Boot CD?
    Information about it here: http://www.ultimatebootcd.com/

I tried all three. F10 takes me to the bios setup which i already knew. F11 Still didnt do anything. F12 brought up new text. It brought up:

    NVIDIA Boot Agent 249.0542
    Copyright (c) 2001-2005 NIVIDA Corporation
    Copyright (c) 1997-2000 Intel Corporation

(after about 20-30 seconds it brought up:)

PXE-E61: Media test failure, check cable
    PXE-M0F: exiting NVIDIA Boot Agent.

I checked out the ultimate boot disc site. I have another extremely old and slow computer which dosnt burn cds. I do have a smartphone with 4G LTE if we can use that. I also have a flash drive.

Okay, give that a try. I am leaving tomorrow for my honeymoon so I won't be around. For further assistance, I'd recommend reporting for help. A Moderator or Administrator will get back to you. Good luck :)
