    new.net is known as "foistware" and gets bundled with certain installs, one of them being bearshare. It is often found advertising and "spyware" which should be removed to. Look in Add/Remove programs for New.net, SaveNow, Webhancer and others. Each should be removed from Add/Remove and after rebooting, you should run Lavasoft's Ad-Aware program to remove any remnants.

    Here is an MS link on New.net:

    http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q302463

    You can get Ad-aware from lavasoft here:

    http://www.lavasoftusa.net/

    You should also download the current reflist update and unzip it to the Ad-Aware programs folder and run it to update the signature.

    When you run Ad-Aware, have it do a memory and deep registry scan as well as all drives on which you have installed programs.

    Check the items to be removed, click "make backup", then finish. Reboot afterwards and do a second scan to ensure everything has been removed. Do read the FAQ to understand that you may have to find substitutes for some of the programs that installed them.

    Received PM from ComputerAngel:
    Here is a link in which TonyKlein gives an explanation of how to remove New.net if it is not in Add/Remove:

    http://forums.techguy.org/showthread.php?s=&threadid=58965&highlight=newdotnet

    Please also download this zip file from lavasoft. If you have connectivity problems after removing Newdotnet try running it to see if that corrects it.

    http://www.lavasoft.de/aaw/binary/whndnfix.zip

    If it fails you will need to follow these directions:
    ============
    Winsock2 Fix;

    Please note if you are going to do this you must have installation cd or cab files.

    -Go to add and remove program | windows setup tab| take the check mark out of COMMUNICATION | click apply | when asked to reboot say no.

    -Click start | run | type regedit follow the path:

    HKEY LOCAL MACHINES | system | current control set | services | winsock2

    -Right clickl select delete.

    -Go to add remove programs | windows setup | put check in COMMUNICATIONS

    -Reboot and try to browse.

    (adapted from "Dels" winsock2 fix)

    You should print the above out before proceeding, in case you need to use it.
