error in software/need dlls for kernel

    Downloaded Windows latest media player to 13 mo old HP with Windows XP Home Edition Version 5.1.26000. (Have no XP cd). Player worked well. Reboot error message: Windows could not start because of an error in the software. Load needed DLLs for kernel. Safe mode - same results. Boot results in grey screen with white blocks across bottom. Boot disk lets me use floppy drive and CD. Nothing I've tried gets me to a C prompt or into windows. I have (had?) 29 gigabytes of data to back up on the hard drive if I ever get in to it again. The 5 downloaded boot disks resulted in a wrong image error. Old dos games work in floppy. Have video & sound. Tried to set Bios to default; didn't help. Any ideas?
