    Hi,

    My OS is Windows ME

Just over the past few days when I start my computer I get this error message:
'A required .DLL file, PSAPI.DLL, was not found'

then the internet connects automatically, no browsers open, it just connects. I've had a look in Internet options to see if I have connect on start-up or something selected but cant find any options like that.

    thanks for any help

Have you done a Find/Search for psapi.dll on your PC yet?
What version of windows are you running?

    I'm running Windows ME.

I did a search and found the file in programmes such as Dreamweaver and Ezpad. I copied and pasted one of these into my system folder restarted and got another error msg saying its the wrong psapi file.

OK, let's see what in your start-ups may be calling that dll file.

Go to http://tomcoyote.org/hjt/ and download HiJackThis. Use Winzip to unzip it, then install and run it. To run, click the “Scan” button. When it's done the "Scan" button changes to "Save Log". Save the log file it creates (it should open in Notepad at that point). Copy and paste the results in your next post. Most of what it finds is harmless, so do not do anything yet. Someone will be glad to help you sort out any of the baddies that may be in there.

Go into add/remove programs and remove New.Net (or NewDotNet)

Next, download and run CoolWebShredder to remove Cool Web Search.
    http://www.spychecker.com/program/cwshredder.html

    Reboot

Run another HJT log and post it. The above should clean up a lot of the R0 and R1 items.

I'm going to hold off on the R0 and R1 items until we see how much CoolWebShredder removes.

In Hijack This, check ALL of the following items. Double check so as to be sure not to miss a single one.
Next, close all browser Windows, and have HT fix all checked.

IF you are running ME or XP Disable SYSTEM RESTORE : How to disable or enable System Restore in Windows ME

How to disable or enable System Restore in Windows XP

Next reboot into Safe Mode and remove the following files and folders that are bolded

    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\winboot.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\iedll.exe
    C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\NZDD.DLL
    C:\WINDOWS\NEWDOT~1.DLL,NewDotNetStartup

See here http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406 for how to start in safe mode if you don't know how.

    Reboot into normal mode.

Before you re-enable system restore I would strongly recommend that you do an online virus scan at least one and preferably 2 of the following sites:

    http://security.symantec.com/default.asp?
    http://housecall.trendmicro.com/
    http://www.pandasoftware.com/activescan/

RE-ENABLE SYSTEM RESTORE and create a NEW restore point

Now download Spybot - Search & Destroy (if you haven't got the program installed already)

After installing, first press Online, and search for, put a check mark at, and install all updates.

Next, close all Internet Explorer windows, hit 'Check for Problems', and have SpyBot remove/fix all it finds that are in RED

    Reboot

Last, run HJT again and post your log again to see if anything was missed.

    Thanks

    Hi guys,
I am currently running windows 98 recently i deleted some files i thought i didnt need.....i think ive performed a big OOPS

At start up i get the message "Error starting program" followed by 2 windows displaying :-
    1. Run Time error '62' Input pastend file.....
    2. The SPNGHELPER.EXE File is Missing export SHELL32.DLL:SH get folder Path A.....

At this point i dont have a task bar, but when i connect to the net it reappears with Autostarter in it......

I have tried to locate the files with no success, also tried running windows through again but didnt fix the prob......

Ive read Halo's thread and was wondering whether the instructions given there would apply to me too????

Let's address your missing files problem first. Do you remember what folders they were deleted from?

Do you have either a Windows install or upgrade or recovery CD?

OR, better yet, do you have a folder called C:\Windows\Options\Cabs?

Go to Start > Run and type in SFC (System File Check) and make sure there is a "dot" in "Scan for Altered files" (that's the default so it should be there when you start SFC)

Click Start so it starts scanning. As it finds each altered file it will pup up a screen that gives you the option to Update the info, Restore the file, or Ignore.

At this point you have to be careful. Since Windows 98 is 5 years old the "altered file" could actually be a newer and better file than the original file. You don't want to replace a newer file with an older file. I would suggest that you select Ignore the first time thru and make a list of all the files SFC reports as "altered".

IF you absolutely KNOW that it was one of the files you deleted, then go ahead and replace it. But also list it, we may have to update it with a newer version later.

Once SFC is done and you have your list, presumably you haven't fixed any (or very many) yet. Open either Windows Explorer of use the Find command to find each file on your list. Right click on the file and select Properties and then click on the version tab. Write down the description, version number, and the Company name. This way we know what files are newer and DO NOT need replacing.

Obviously if the file can't be found, it needs replacing. (In my case I have between 6 to 10 files that are reported as "missing", but since they are not necessary and could present a security hole, I don't want to restore them.)

No problem. I will be away from the computer for a few hours, but it should give you a chance to get a list of files that SFC says are altered and do the research on them.

Remember, when it says "altered" it is in reference to the original version. Some (a lot?) of these files may be newer versions of what it has as ref points. So, not all have to be replaced.
