Windows me
System model: supermicro p3tssa
Processor : Pentium iii 1.2 GHz
Ram : 256Mb
System resources 61 % free
Virtual memory managed by windows
40 GB hdd partioned into two
Internet explorer 6
A new Lexmark x1180 series USB printer + Zexel ADSL USB modem has been installed recently before the following faults occurred:
1. Blue screen with error message oe:0177:bff8e64b intermittently while trying to access the net.
2. Spooling errors intermittently.
Ater the computer crashes and i have to restart, I then need to re-enable the always dial my default connection in the ie6 tools menu and unplug /plug the USB modem so the icon in the taskbar reappears.
3. System resources low message intermittently appear
4. Green question mark was shown next to generic USB bus in system properties. After a search on google, two references which matched the faults were:
1.Vj, suggested that the drivers=mmsystem.dll file in the system.ini file missing and to perform a clean boot in windows using msconfig.
2. Tec guy answered majkyochems query
I tried both suggestions, but the fault continues. I replaced the two rams, checked for Trojans using ad-aware, and spybot .
I next formatted the hard drive and re-installed software. All seemed well until the printer was installed and the faults re-occurred. I returned the printer and the same model was given, same fault occurred. After that I checked for diver updates. The printer works fine on an xp computer. The green question mark was resolved by replacing it with file version 4.90.3000.1.
Please note that the original printer was connected to the parallel port. finally, I tried a belkin usb2 5 port pci card to try and solve the fault-still no joy.Windows me

Hiya and welcome

First off, the HijackLog is old. Go here for the newest version:

http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip

As you say that the problems only happen when you install the printer or modem, as these are both USB it looks like it may be the USB that's at fault.

Go to Control panel | System. Device Manager. Under USB, is there a listing for USB 2.0 Root Hub, or does it have another version number?

If not, do you know which version of USB you have installed?

Also, lets see a list of IRQ's:

Go to Start | Run, and type MSINFO32
On the left choose hardware Rescources, then IRQ's
Copy/paste the list here

Regards

As you say that you are trying to install a Lexmark X1100 Series, do you have the actual version number, say X1180.

Also, for the Zexel ADSL USB modem and belkin usb2 5 port pci card, do you know the version numbers?

Plus, do you have your motherboard CD?

Going to go through the running programs first of all, to clear up those rescources....

ScanRegistry: Scans the system registry and makes back-ups at start-up. Important should the registry become corrupt. Keep

TaskMonitor: The Task Monitor checks the disk-access patterns of programs when they are started and stores this information in log files in the Applog folder. Task Monitor also records the number of times you use a program. The Disk Defragmenter tool uses this information to optimize your hard disk so that programs that you use frequently are loaded faster. Not required - but can be useful. Up to you

PCHealth: This is a "scheduler" and does not turn off PC Health. For more information refer here

http://groups.google.com/groups?q=P...l=en&[email protected]&rnum=1

Not needed

SystemTray: SYSTRAY.EXE - System Tray Services. Provides the Volume Control, PC Card Status, Power Management and other icons that reside in the System Tray. Keep

LoadPowerProfile: Power management specifics such as monitor shut-off, system standby, etc. Associated with power management and is listed twice - see here. Loads your selected power scheme. May not be required - depends upon whether you modify the default Control Panel -> Power Options settings. Up to you

NvCplDaemon: Intializes the clock and memory settings on nVidia based graphics cards. Enable if you overclock your card. Up to you

nwiz: Associated with the newer versions of nVidia graphics cards drivers. Allows you to immensely improve desktop layouts by setting preferences and optimizations. However, this isn't necessary for the operation of your system. Not needed

NvMediaCenter: System Tray icon used to manage settings for nVidia based graphics cards. May be required for some 3D applications to recognize your card correctly - such as the game "Everquest". Otherwise, settings can be changed manually via Display Properties. Up to you

OWCCardbusTray: Icon in the system tray for safely removing PCMCIA cards. Only required if you have a laptop or desktop which includes a PCMCIA card interface. Up to you

CnxDslTaskBar: Connexant DSL Taskbar as used on Acess Runner and Samsung AHT-E310 ADSL modems. Not needed

Lexmark X1100 Series: Your printer, leave for now

LexStart: Lexmark printer software may add Lexstart.exe in the startup folder to handle print commands that you send to the printer. Sometimes required for the printer to work correctly - not in the case of a Lexmark Z42 for instance. Up to you

AEsys: Not sure, leave

*StateMgr: Windows ME default for System Restore. Do NOT disable!

SchedulingAgent: MS Scheduling Agent displayed as a box with a stopwatch in the System Tray that is only needed if you have regular scheduled disk defragmenting, ScanDisk, etc. Required if you have regularily scheduled events such as weekly virus scans. Up to you

MOSearch: Fast Search in Office XP - similar to the new revision of the Find Fast feature in Office 2000. Fast Search uses the Indexing Services in Office XP to create a catalog of Office files on your computer's hard disk. As with Find Fast - a waste of resources. If it can't be disabled via MSCONFIG try here

http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q282/1/06.asp

Not needed

MDM7: Used by developers for debugging. Those who have encountered it have unchecked it with no degradation in performance. May cause your computer to "hang" if you have MS Visual Studio installed and this disabled because it appears to take over error handling. See here to disable

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;321410

Up to you

ctfmon.exe: CTFMon is involved with the language/alternative input services in Office XP. CTFMON.exe will continue to put itself back into MSConfig when you run the Office XP apps as long as the Text Services and Speech applets in the Control Panel are enabled. Not required if you don't need these features. For more info on ctfmon see here

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;282599

Up to you

Microsoft Office: Application which launches common MS Office components to help speed up the launch of Office programs. It's somewhat of a resource hog, and some users claim there's no difference with or without it but it usually isn't required. Note - if you make use of the Microsoft Office Shortcut Bar outside an office program this application will need to be enabled for it to show. Not needed

Okay, go to Start | Run and type MSCONFIG, startup tab. Uncheck the ones you don't want, apply and restart.
