Whenever I start up my computer I get the following error:

ERROR LOADING C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\BRIDGE.DLL
I have no idea what to do! I am not the best with computers

Also my sound no longer works, I do not know if it is because of this error but everytime I check the sound in settings it says I do not have any devices installed. I tried to insert a recovery CD but then I got a message saying that there was no CD ROM device either! As you can see I am having a rather difficult time! I am working with WIN 98

Thanks for all of you help!

It's the result of an ad/spyware hijack. You may have other related issues as well so I will move this to the Security forum for follow-ups.

For now, unzip HijackThis to a permanent folder, run it and select Scan. Then save the Scanlog and copy/paste the results to a reply here.

You have quite a lot of stuff there that needs to be cleaned. The first thing I would suggest is that you go to Add/Remove programs and remove, one at a time, rebooting after each removal:

Webhancer
New.net

If you have problems with New.net, see this link:

http://www.newdotnet.com/#remove

Then go to this site and obtain and run the CoolWebShredder, CWShredder.exe; have it fix problems:

http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/downloads.html

>> Next run HijackThis and check the following entries which may remain, close all browser windows and select Fix Checked:

Finally, you MUST complete this cleaning by installing, UPDATING and doing a full system Scan with Ad-Aware, following Winchester's directions. Have it remove or quarantine all files it identifies as suspicious.

Ad-Aware Home Page and Ad-Aware 6: Reference Guide by Winchester73

>> Post another Scanlog when ready.

I have tried doing everything you told me but whenever I run the ad-ware scan and try to delete the files, it freezes on me and nothing happens. Let me know what I can do to fix this! Thanks

Try running Ad-Aware in Safe Mode. To start in Safe Mode you can press and hold the ctrl key promptly on restart. You should get a startup menu with the option. If you have trouble with that, run msconfig, select the Advanced tab and "enable startup menu". This has to be unchecked later.

Alternately, or additionally, you can install, UPDATE, and run Spybot.
