A pretty odd problem, my attempts to connect me and my girlfriend's laptops together for some LAN gaming with an ethernet cable has had some odd problems, with my LAN connection showing up as an Unidentified, Public Network which I cannot edit in any way whatsoever. I'm at a loss. I've tried setting a static IP and it didn't appear to help at all.

The network bridge is to use my laptop as a wireless adaptor for my Xbox.

The Media disconnected for the Atheros AR8151 probably means that it or the cable is defective. Does a LED light when you connect the cable?

Static IP is fine, but don't use a public IP and don't assign Default Gateway or DNS server.

I suggest, just as one example, 10.1.1.10 on one computer and 10.1.1.20 on the other. (Subnet Mask 255.255.255.0).

I tried that, but the network still shows up as Unidentified - Public and I'm unable to alter or use it.

By "use it" I assume you mean you cannot ping either way by IP address? That is probably a firewall issue.

I would expect this type of connection to be "Unidentified." I don't know why Vista and Windows 7 sometimes mark networks as Public and refuse to allow a change to Home or Work or Private.
