Hi there and thanks in advance for any help! I am experiencing a problem when trying to play Everquest whereby i get frequently get disconnected. There doesnt seem to be any pattern to when it happens and when it does happen it seems to somehow corrupt my dial-up connection whereby I cannot get any other internet application to work unless I disconnect and reconnect my dial-up connection.

My system is a PIII 650mhz, 512mb RAM, Geforce2 MX 100/200, Yamaha PCI Audio (DS1x Native), Win2000 Pro, DirectX 9.0, all drivers updated.

When i was finally able to chat with Everquest tech support I was told that it wasnt an Everquest problem and to contact my ISP (NoCharge.com) for tech support. I explained to them that every other internet application (MSIE, DAoC, Madden 2003, Unreal Tournament) I use runs flawlessly with this ISP and i didnt think that was the problem (I could be mistaken, if so please feel free to say so).

I have tried many of the remedies suggested from the EQ Knowledge Base including altering the datarate.txt, deleting the eqclient.ini, playing without sound, ect without success. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated as its a very enjoyable game even if their tech support is lacking.

What you describe sounds extremey similar to an issue i was having. The game would run horribly choppy at random. EQ Tech didnt know what they were doing and told me the similar thing as they did you. Any other internet application would run fine. I traced the problem down to the copy of zonealarm that i had installed. For whatever reason, zone alarm had some issue with EQ, even though it used to run fine together. Once i uninstalled zonealarm, i no longer had a problem. Are you using any firewall software of this sort?

The only firewall software i have installed is part of my McAfee anti-virus software which i do not load up unless im not going to be playing games online. I appreciate the suggestion though and if u have any other ideas as to what it might be im all ears.

This sounds very similar to my recent experience.

I recently installed a fresh Windows XP Professional on my computer. Since then I will get randomly disconnected. Just like you, no patterns.

When it happens, I can still connect again but its all very slow.

I do use Zonealarm, but as I recall I didn't have zonealarm installed the first time I tried things out to see if they worked. I was booted repeatedly.

Unfortunately I can't help since I haven't discovered the reason for this yet.

    *EDIT:

I uninstalled the QOS on the network connections and my disconnect problems went away.

heh, EQantics....I used to play EQ and ran with that problem for a loooong time. It ended up being an IRQ sharing problem..Try placing your PCI cards (sound, modem, etc) into different slots, but just change one at a time until they show up in different IRQ's on your post screen during bootup.. This problem is usually because the modem and sound, or video and sound cards are sharing an IRQ, and will overload the port causing your ld, and nasty corpse runs. WOOT!

    I fixed it!

I removed the QOS service and now operations are back to normal.

I am sadly not up to date on the newer IT networking toys. From what I can gather, QOS is a software layer that handles and rearranges network packets.

I believe this rearranging of packets is what disconnected me from the servers.
