    Hi,

I was using the internet when suddenly the window closed and everything disappeared from my desktop (task bar, start button, desktop icons..everything leaving just the background). Didn't get any error messages or warnings either. I tried clicking on the desktop but got no response so I pressed ctrl, alt, delete, to restart. But when it restarted I got an empty desktop again and it wasn't until the 4th time restarting when everything was there again. I then opened internet explorer and it wouldn't respond. On the fifth time restarting, everything was fine but half an hour later I got the empty desktop again and had to restart 5 times again. Is this a virus? How to I get rid of this problem since it was running fine before this. I'm running windows xp. I don't know if you need to look at a hijack this log but just incase here it is. Also tried system restore but it couldn't restore.

I've tried ctrl+alt+del to bring up the task manager and typing in 'explorer.exe' in new task. This brings back everything but they disappear again after 2 seconds. After trying the above a few more times I eventually get everything to stay but the system is very slow and stops responding. I'm still back to the empty background after start up.... anyone know what the problem could be?

From the log it looks like Symantec is screwy or something is screwing it up. I would disable it from starting and see what happens. I would definitely disable some of that other startup stuff as well; e.g. do you need to run Bittorrent at startup?

Try using this reg file to restore the startup explorer. Then do your antimalware scans (until someone looks at the log).

Have you attempted to re-boot into the "Advanced Options Menu", which has Safe Mode and those other options such as; "Last Known Good Configuration", if not yet, then try these, and if booted in safe mode, then run the system file checker tool, which will replace any needed missing or corrupt system files. Just click your start, run, and type; sfc /scannow , and do include that space before the /. Also have your XP CD ready to put in for this. And do run scans for malware ( viruses, spyware, etc.) A reinstall of your Symantec Norton Internet Security may be needed, as juju68 has said, and be off line until ready for updates.

Thanks to all who have replied! I have ran anti-malware scans in safemode, entered the reg file, used the file checker tool and tried reinstalling Norton as suggested. There seems to be a problem with reinstalling norton now because after reinstalling from the cd and restart - everytime I click on the norton icon, it brings up a screen saying 'configuring the anti-virus' and disappears after a few seconds (whereas before, it brought up a menu screen). How do I get norton to work again? I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling a few times but the same thing happens. The problem of the disappearing icons and taskbar seems to have gone for the moment but still the system is still slow at start-up. How do I disable some of the stuff that runs at start-up? Could there be anything else causing it to run slower than usual?

This small program installs into your Control Panel, it is called Startup Control Panel 2.8, and is here; http://www.mlin.net/StartupCPL.shtml , then just keep the main items which you do know, and some that are unknown do a search for the specific file shown to start in the file path displayed.
