Wheh I open Excel by clicking on an .xls spreadsheet, I get a memory error

Microsoft Excel: EXCEL.EXE - Application Error
The instruction at "0x301bed0c" referenced memory at "0x00000024". The memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program

When I open Excel directly all is well !!!

    Does anyone have any ideas?

First before you do anythnig update your virus defs and run a full scan. If all is clean try deleting your normal.dot file and try and start Excel again.

(NB - deleting normal.dot is a fix for problems with Word, not Excel).

Your description is unclear. Do you mean when clicking on a particular spreadsheet, or on any spreadsheet? If the former, the file might be corrupted.

There are several things you could try. "Detect & Repair" via the Help menu, for one. However, I can't say whether this is available to you as you haven't stated your Excel version.
