    Hi...Again

Recently my excel and word documents, when opened from a shortcut on the desktop, take up to 20 seconds to open...vary occasionally even longer.

i did a disk-defrag, as it was recommended after de-frag analysis, which seemed to help for ONE DAY!(n)

Any suggestions why this might be happening. All these files were ok when i first started using them.

i run AVG ant0virus and AVG anti-spyware too, all seems clear.

    Any help welcome

    Thanks
    Neil

It is also possible you are opening documents created with Word or Excel 2003 that have change tracking enabled. At work I occasionally will open a 50 page Word document that is 30 MB.

My guess is that your anti-virus software has an Office plugin that is scanning the files before opening.

When you open the files do you get a message in the bottom left corner that says "Requesting Virus Scan" or similar message?

    Regards,
    Rollin

Hi SMBD..i started reading that OMG!! it was like a foreign language :(

Hi Frank4d...i couldn't see where that option is...

Hi Rollin_Again.. yes i do get that message, but sometimes a workbook would open straight away, though mostly not.

After getting onto the microsoft page suggested by SMBD i eventually ended up letting microsoft check for updates to Xp and to Office , then downlopaded them, re-booted and 'touch wood' they all seem to be working ok(y)

i will keep my eye on them and if they go 'wonky' again i will report back

Thanks for all the suggestions and the link page. Much Appreciated
