Every time I try to install a new printer, explorer will crash and reset itself. Quite annoying <g>! The OS is Windows XP Pro. The problem started after I tried to install a networked (jet direct) HP Laserject 4050N with the bundled software. Guess that wasn't meant to work with XP. I thought I had uninstalled that, but apparently the problem lingers on....

lyster,
I know nothing about XP, but have you closed all running programs execpt explorer and systray, to include virus protection.
Might check with your printers website tech support.

Unfortunately, I don't get far enough into the "install printer" routine for windows to know what printer it is that I'm trying to install. Windows Explorer will crash before I'm asked what printer it is or what port I'm using.

I did that already. Unfortunately, I think my attempt to install this software is what caused the problem - I cannot open the printers and faxes service at all now. Not to install this or any other printer. I've tried eliminating all obvious references to the 4050N in my registry, but to no avail.

I applied the uninstallation. It reported back that all of HP Jet Direct was removed. I rebooted. The problem persists. I just set this computer up - there were other problems along the way, and this is the last (I hope) issue to be resolved. I haven't set a Restore Point as yet. (I'll have to remember to do that once this is resolved.)

Okay

Let me see if I've got this right. You've uninstalled the HP software, but you're trying to install a printer. Or is it that you're just getting back into the Printer icon in the Control Panel?

Just trying to sort it out in my head. :p

If its the first, what is the printer you're trying? Same one?
We could look for conflicts.

Control Panel | System. Device manager. Look for any yellow ! under printer.

Are you getting any errors when the freeze happens, and when you press ctrl-alt-del, whats running?

Sorry for the confusion. If I attempt to open up Start/ Settings/ Printers and Faxes (where you would go to install any printer) windows explorer crashes and restarts. It's not brand specific - I don't get that far into the installation for Windows to know what printer I'm trying to install. No other folder does this.

Remember, this is Windows XP. The only thing that happens is I'm offered to send an error report to Microsoft, then the window (and the rest of my desktop icons) closes. I get back my icons in short order and I'm back to where I was before trying to open the Printers and Faxes service.

Okay

I'm going to bed in a min, but lets have a look at something else. I run 2000, so not sure, but I think you have this.

Go to Run and type MSINFO32. If you get an error, Start | programs | System Tools | System Information.
On the left choose Software Enviroment, then Startup Programs.
Copy/paste the list here. If you can't, Action | Save as text file, and copy/paste that way.

Regards

Hiya

I've saved it to my drive, and I look at it tommorow, unless anyone else solves it first.
