50% of the time, I right-click on the desktop trash can to empty it, windows explorer hangs and I have to alt+ctrl+del to end the explorer process and start a new one.

    Anyone?

If you have a Vista dvd (not a restore disk or hd image), try running the sfc /scannow option to replace missing or corrupted system files. Be sure to return to Windows Updates after you run the utility.

I believe running sfc /scannow from the 'Run' Box will only run a 'verification' scan. Follow the directions at this link: http://www.tech-recipes.com/rx/2231/vista_run_system_file_checker

Note: there is a space between the c and /.
    (sfc /scannnow)

Ran the test, no errors reported - I almost wish there, would have been an easy fix :)

    Have you scanned for malware?

If the problem is recent, run System Restore.

    Thanks, Unbidden.

What is the current standard software against malware?

I take it Windows Defender is next to useless?

I don't think there is a standard; I use WD, along with SpyBot S+D. For anti-virus I have been using NOD32 on the two XP machines and the free Avast on the Vista pc.

When I need to clean up a friends pc there are many other free tools I use as well.
