Hi I have a Samsung external hard drive that I've always used on my Mac with no problems until I was backing up a large amount of files, during which the wird got knocked and came out and now my hard drive isn't recognised anywhere on my Mac.

I've checked disk utility and everywhere else I can think of and it just does not show up.

Is it possible to get the photos back that hadn't been backed up?

Also if I need to go to a data recovery place where would be best to go? Thank you

Sorry I don't know how much of this is relevant but I bought the hard drive to back up photos from the MacBook because I had ran out of storage on the MacBook. I wanted to then delete all the photos on the MacBook but I was too scared so decided to back up to the cloud as well the hard drive. Some of the photos I did delete off the Mac so I had to get everything to the cloud from my hard drive.

This means now my hard drive no longer shows up there are files on there that didn't make it to the cloud and have also been deleted on my MacBook.

I'm not sure time machine had all my photos backed up because the laptop storage was full it couldn't create them.

    a little confusing

you do not have the photos on the cloud
you do not have the photos on the external harddrive or do did you , but now the drive cannot be read
and you do not have the photos on the mac , because you deleted them and also deleted from the waste basket on the mc

    is that correct

    3 seperate things

    Photos on cloud
    photos on external drive
    photos on mac

    lets deal with each

I had all of the photos on the hard drive that cannot be read.
I deleted some of the photos from the Mac that will be on the hard drive and not the cloud either.
The cloud will have about half of what is on the hard drive.

So my main priority is the hard drive since it has everything.

Then you will need to see if you can recover the data off the harddrive

how did you back up the harddrive ?

whats the model of the Mac ?
are the photos in the waste bin on the Mac?

I was backing up the hard drive to the cloud, that was when it stopped appearing on the Mac.

It's a 2011 MacBook Air and I deleted them out of the waste bin

If you used Time Machine, it would have deleted the oldest backup file before it started the new backup.

Have you tried plugging the external drive in with a new cable? I will assume you have enough space on iCloud to backup?

Can you log onto iCloud and if you can, what is the latest backup date?

Can you plug the external HD into another computer? If so, does it show?
