I can't get my laptop to recognize an external drive on the USB ports in back of computer. The ports on the side do recognize it. I have tried other devices (pen drives) in the back and the ports work fine with them. I'd like to connect the hd in the back so that I can keep the sides clear. Any thoughts?

    Here are the particulars:
    Simpletech 320gb external hd
    Vista Ult 32 bit
    Intel Core 2 7200
