I dislike storing data on CDs. Have an external drive for storage which is turned on only when needed. Was under the impression that it could never crash and my info was safe. Now I hear from someone that hers crashed and she lost all her data. Just how vulnerable is my method? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank

generally you are ok as long as you only turn it on when needed. She might have left hers on at all times, or most of the time. You have to take into account the life of the drive. IE- how long will it last. If you leave it on all the time it racks up hours, the more hours you use the better, I use HD and dvd's. Makes for fretful computing experience.

All hard drives can crash. CDs and DVDs can become unreadable. You need multiple backup copies of important data.
