I am looking into purchasing an external hard drive case for a hard drive for extra storage and portability. While looking at them, I see that some are made with aluminum so that the drive stays cool while others have fans. Does an aluminum case keep the drive cool enough?

Yes, the heat dissipation will probably be better than it would be internally fitted.

I've used both the aluminum ones and the plastic ones. I haven't had any issues with heat with any of them. The 3.5" only smaller cases get warmer, so if you're leaving it on all the time, I'd suggest the larger case with the fan, the drive will run cooler. Here's my personal favorite right now, 5.25" USB 2.0/Firewire External Case, it gives you the performance of Firewire and the portability of USB 2.0, and it's reasonably priced. (y)
