Hi i recently bought an external hard drive.

I have took out my Dell C600 laptop hard drive and put it in the enclosure. Then i have connected it via USB, it does not recognise it.

I go to device manager and it has a yellow apostrophe called USB mass storage device. It is not showing in my computer.

Please help!

I have been told i need to partition and format, what is this??? Also what is fdisk and do i need to use it???

I would like to keep my files on the drive i have if possible

Hope someone can help
Thanks

First of, we need to fix the problem in Device Manager before you can format it.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.
