Is this a hard drive inside a USB enclosure? If so, try removing it from the enclosure and connecting it directly to the SATA ports inside the computer. Sometimes, the enclosures go bad. An alternative is to buy a SATA to USB adapter and try connecting it that way.

But, it's my guess there's an issue with the enclosure and your hard drive is still good. You need to test it by above method to find out.

Yes, so it is a hard drive that connects via USB to your computer then? Can you take apart the external hard drive and connect it to an internal SATA port inside the computer?

It is a DESKTOP computer, correct, not a laptop?

No. It's either a bad enclosure, bad hard drive inside the enclosure or they are both bad. it also might be a bad USB cable so try changing that before jumping ahead.

Ok see if you can take the hard drive out of the enclosure if possible.

Are you in the USA? I ask because am having trouble trying to run down a user manual for that drive.

I opened the case and it doesn't have a plug to connect to the pc, just the one that looks like a galaxy s5 charger to USB that it came with.

Would you be able/willing to post a picture of it, by any chance?
