I have a Seagate Free Agent and suddenly I can't access it. When I plug it into the usb port I get a message that says:

A device in the USB Port has malfunctioned windows does not recognize it.

I need to find some way of getting the data off of it.

I have several laptops, but the one I am using is a Dell Inspiron 1525 with Vista OS.

Please let me know what I can try.

Do the lights function and does the drive spin?
    Have you tried other ports?
Have you tried it on your other machines?
Can you see this drive in Disk Management?

The drive does seem to spin, although there are no lights. I tried all ports. After leaving it there for an hour or so, it did finally show up, but if I disconnect it I am not sure if I will get the data again. The same thing happened on four machines.

Not sure what you mean by Disc Management. It now shows up on "Computer" on Vista, but it didn't before.

Copy the data if it's important. You may be right about it not running again.
Try formatting the drive to see it improves.
    For Disk Management, Rt-click Computer/Manage.
