After reformating did you install all the drivers for your system, It probably came with a driver disc, or you can download them from the manufacturers website. If your USB ports are not working you might need the chipset driver. Does this happen with all USB devices or just this external drive?

When the drive is plugged in, what do you see in Disk Manager? Right Click My Computer > Manage > Disk Manager

it shows c and d drives as "healthy" under hard disks

    devices with removable stoarge

    DVD/CD-RW (E DRIVE)
    DRIVE F (CD DRIVE)
    then removable drives G, H, I and J

BUT NO EXTERNAL HARD DRIVE (DRIVE K)

the drive is powered up and working but not showing in this menu!!

    thanx
