So I have a 200G Maxtor external drive that was working fine. I plugged it in to my brothers comp to upload some files from the computer to the hard drive. It was working fine there after but a couple days later after only using it once on my laptop it started up with this nonsense:

1 I plug it in, Autoplay search comes up scanning the drive.
2 It shows up in My Computer and registers as a drive
3 At this point I attempt to open something and it says the file/drive has been corrupted and is unreadable
4 Shortly thereafter it disappears from the My Computer screen and no longer registers as a drive, however, it still registers as a piece of hardware attached to the computer.

Plugging it in and taking it out of the computer both register the audible windows warning that a new piece of hardware has been attached/removed....

    Any ideas?

Virus scans on both the PC and Laptop return negative.

The external drive is actually two pieces of hardware.

One is the case enclosed USB interface to the drive, this is what registers as being connected.

The second is the drive itself.

My guess is either the drive is partially unplugged inside the case, or that the drive itself is dead.

They are a standard PC hard drive inside the case, connected by a USB interface module.

Yes that I am aware of, I have one I created using an enclosure.

I am inclined to believe the drive is actually connected inside as the files and everything show up when I am able to enter the drive immediately after connecting it. It just says the files are corrupt or unreadable if I try to open them then the drive dissappears.

Incidentally the same thing happened with my Ipod when it was connected and set to hard drive use.
