My external Hard Drive is up the wall, I've only had the thing for a month.

It starts up when I turn it on, makes a humming noise for about two minutes then shuts up. The light stays on but that's it, I've pluged in into various computers and none of them show it under "My Computer".

What can I do, is my stuff saveable? Is "saveable" even a word?

I'm running XP Home Ed and the HD is a "Lacie".

R Click on "My Computer" .. choose Manage > Disc Management ... does it show up in here ???

I understand "saveable" .. therefor it's a word.
And .. Welcome to the TSG forum

I've gone into "Computer Management", "Storage" and then "Removable Storage" and it doesn't show up here.

Sounds like you took the wrong path ..
Right Click on "My Computer" .. choose Manage > Disc Management ...

Could be the HD or the electronics in the Enclosure.
From the "sound" of it ... I'm placing bets on the HD.

Think you can take it apart and remove the HD ??
How big of an external HD do you want ??

Like so ....

Done as you said but it didn't even show up.

It is a 320gb External HD. I still have the reciept and will take it back tomorrow. If they have to lose the HD to save then stuff and then have to give me a new one then that's what I'll do even if I have to pay for it.
