i recently ordered a skymaster 3.5" external disk drive enclosure with a 200GB hard drive inside it. i plugged it in and used partitionmagic to format it to NTFS and it works pretty good, but whenever i go into a subfolder such as my Movies subfolder, it displays it, but i windows explorer area pops up, when i click send or dont send, the folder displaying the contents of my external drive automatically closes. and if i drag the error off the screen and ignore it and keep looking through my drive, a bigger error comes up that closes everything and restarts explorer.exe....

does anyone know what i can do to fix this? i've tried reformatting and checking the disk for errors, and even repartioned it, yet it still doesnt work properly, and even though i dont need to install the drivers (running windows XP) i tried that too and it still does not work properly. any suggestions???:(

Try this, just to check things....

Remove the HD from the enclosure and install it as a slave in the computer. Now try to access stuff on it. If it works, then you are going to have to consider the connection side of things.

Reinstall the USB drivers/controllers. Do this....Open device manager, and uninstall ALL entries under the Universal Serial Bus Controllers entry (right click on each and uninstall). When done, right click on any other main entry, and click 'Scan for new hardware'. Let windows install the drivers it needs, then reboot TWICE.

Now try the unit again, and see if it works correctly.

If not, come on back.

Create a file with NOTEPAD containing the following lines and save it as FIX.REG
-------------------------- cut here --------------------------------
REGEDIT4

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Session Manager\Environment]

"DEVMGR_SHOW_NONPRESENT_DEVICES"="1"
-------------------------- cut here --------------------------------

Double click on FIX.REG and say yes to the Merge Into Registry question.

Unplug ALL USB devices.
Open Device Manager.
View, Show Hidden Devices.
Uninstall all devices under USB Controllers.
Uninstall all devices under Disk Drives that you know are not present.
Uninstall all devices under Storage Volumes. Say no to any reboot prompts until you are finished. Also, if a Storage Volume doesn't uninstall, ignore it and move to the next one.
If you have a yellow ? with unknown devices, uninstall all of the entries there as well.

When this is done, reboot TWICE.

Reconnect the USB devices and see if they're recognized properly.
