Solved External monitor stopped working

I have a surface laptop that I have been using with an external monitor for over a year. Lately I could only use one screen, the laptop or the external monitor. Now its become worse. If I try to use the external monitor, the laptop screen turns off. I have to power off and on to have it come back. I am not technical, so instructions have to be as simple as possible.

Check the display settings and see if the screen is set to disconnect once you connect the monitor?
