Hi all. I bought an external webcam to use with my tablet on skype (or similar). It doesn't recognise the camera. Ive tried downloading various apps with no joy. To use an external webcam do I have to buy a laptop or PC? Or are there any tablets that will recognise a usb webcam?

Hi Mikeisleofman, and welcome to TSG. I don't think anyone here can offer much specific help without knowing the brands and full model numbers of your tablet and webcam. Can you please tell us this information. It would not hurt if you also told us the exact version of the tablet's operating system.

Hi, thanks. Well Im confident it wont be happening with this Samsung Tab A. The cam is a Logitech. I guess I want to spend as little as possible and I do prefer a tablet but If it needs to be a laptop then so be it.

Are we safe to assume that the camera either has a USB-C OTG plug on its cable or that you are using a USB-C OTG adapter if the camera has a USB-A plug?

Have you made sure that USB Host OTG is enabled on your Tab A

When you installed the apps you did try, did you grant all requested permissions during installation?

Beyond that, we will probably need more specific information on the hardware involved

Can you narrow that down a bit more?

Can you also please narrow that down some?

Thanks again Chuck. I think it would be easier to identify a tablet that might simply recognize a USB webcam. I suspect most laptops would automatically recognize a USB webcam. Thanks for your efforts.
